Brookgreen Gardens an Oasis for All Ages

Situated between Myrtle Beach and nearby Pawleys Island, beautiful Brookgreen Gardens offers 9,000 acres of lush gardens, amazing sculptures, wildlife, abandoned rice fields and a unique look into the past.

Brookgreen Gardens, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

As a National Historic Landmark, Brookgreen Gardens offers the most extensive collection of figurative sculptures as well as the only zoo accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums on the coast of the Carolinas – the Lowcountry History and Wildlife Preserve. It’s a great place to start any Myrtle Beach vacation.

Designed around the walkways laid out by Anna Hyatt Huntington, the gardens are considered one of the nation’s most beautiful botanical displays. The Huntington Sculpture Garden opened in 1932 and offers an ever-growing collection that now features more than 1,200 works, from the early 1800s to the present.

Visitors to the wildlife preserve may explore the Lowcountry Trail with its archeological sites, tour animal exhibits, and travel by boat or overland vehicle deep into the preserve.

A favorite at the Lowcountry Zoo is the otter exhibit in the River Basin Retreat. Acrylic panels of this above-ground pool serve as replicas of river banks and provide the otters with places to rest above the water while also serving as “diving boards” when they jump into the pool.

The “see-through” panels enable visitors of all ages to watch the otters up close underwater and photograph the lively and playful critters.
